Oregon Programs
Oregon is known for its tall, dense forests
and scenic coastline. Less well known are the deserts and prairies that cover the eastern
half of the state. Two north-south mountain ranges – the Cascades the Pacific Coast Range form the boundaries of the fertile Willamette Valley,
one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. Oregon is the ninth largest state, covering 97,073 square miles. As of 2005,
Oregon’s population was estimated at 3,641,056.
Oregon Genetics Resources
Oregon Medical Genetic, Genetic Counseling, and Prenatal Diagnosis Services Oregon
- Oregon Clinical Genetic Evaluation and Genetic Counseling services are provided by several independent centers. Contact information is listed on the GeneClinics (select "Patient/Clients on the left hand side", then scroll down to "How to find Genetic Services in my area").
Support Groups and Other Resources for Families
- The Oregon Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Needs is a good starting place for finding resources.
- Genetic Alliance - Many people with genetic conditions find it helpful to talk with others with the same condition. The Genetic Alliance maintains a national list of support and advocacy groups for genetic conditions. Some of the support groups have Oregon chapters or representatives.
Newborn Screening
- Newborn Screening Blood Test - Oregon newborns are screened for over 32 metabolic conditions like PKU, hemoglobin conditions like Sickle Cell Disease, and several other disorders.
- Newborn Hearing Screening - Almost all Oregon hospitals screen newborns for hearing loss.
Oregon Public Health Genetics Program
- The Oregon Public Health Genetics Program website has information about Oregon’s genetic privacy and nondiscrimination laws, the State Genetics Plan, and other program activities.
